A popular food retailer is set to reopen some shops around the UK dispite the coronavirus lockdown rule that has been put into place. The bakery chain, which has over 2,000 shops in the UK said it would open some shops in Newcastle as a trail run to see if anything happens and then could be reopening some shops in the UK to everyone even in lockdown since the UK lockdown isn’t to bad at the minute and is set to be back to normal if all goes well, however if all goes bad, Greggs could be closing all it’s shops after reopening them.

Greggs shut all of there food retailers about a month ago when lockdown first started and earlier this month, KFC, Burger King and other food chains have reopened there restaurants for delivery only. The Greggs chief executive Rodger Whiteside said he wants to open about 700 stores from the 8th June and could open more stores if he wants to. He intends to have all of his store up and running by the 1st July 2020 when the government’s job retention scheme is due to end. “We expect it will only be possible to open this many shops if the government has taken a first step in relaxing the lockdown, which could be to open the schools,” said Mr Whiteside.

“We want to play our part in getting the nation back up and running again, so we are planning to conduct a limited trial with volunteers to explore how we can reopen our shops with new measures in place that keep our colleagues and customers as safe as we can when we reopen at scale.” said a Greggs Spokeswomen. Greggs could reopen some shops in the UK very soon and could be back on track as well, if all goes well.
