Facebook which is by far the biggest social network platform has chosen Halloween to announce its average September visitor figures – 1.49 Billion people a day on its main platform and around 2bn overall. This is up 9% on last year but below expectations, hence the wailing and gnashing of teeth from shareholders, which at one point wiped 20% off the companies value.

Expectations were for 1.51 Bn per day and pundits cite the rise in costs & flat growth in Europe the US & Canada as a concern. However sales rose by $3bn (33% meaning the business is increasing revenue per visitor) and given 80% plus of US citizens are already members FB cant realistically expect to grow user numbers at the same break neck speed.

What is possibly of a concern is the number of data breaches and the continued proliferation of “fake news” which is possibly turning people away from it as their daily time filler. Only time will tell if this announcement ends up being a Trick or a Treat Good news for YouTube?
