The ICO, Information Commissioner, have fined the mobile network EE for sending messages without their consent! The ICO believe that EE have sent more than 2.5m messages to customers… this was only in 2018! The purpose of these messages was to ensure that the customers will either upgrade or buy themselves a headset from EE and or any firm apps that they wanted their customers to use. Every message that EE have sent is said to be from there service messages instead of direct marketing.

“These were marketing messages which promoted the company’s products and services,” said Andy White, director of investigations at the ICO, however they have ruled out the messages that included promotional material then electronic marketing. The fine for not complying to the rules could have been up to £500,000, however they have only been fined £100,000! EE said, “We’re committed to ensuring our customers are fully aware of their options throughout the life of their contract, and we apologise to the customers who received these messages,”. EE will accept the ICO’s findings and have said they are wanting to improve from this mistake!
