More than 11 thousand people have signed a petition for safety improvements to be made at a university lake after a student was found dead.

The body of 19-year-old Daniel Williams was found in Whiteknights Lake at the university of Reading campus on Tuesday.

A six day air and land search for Daniel Williams was done after he went missing from the university of Reading in the early hours of January 31th. Mr Williams was last seen leaving a student union bar.

The university said it would review any concerns raised along with outcomes from the police investigations. The death of the computer sciences student was being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

One of the students Ellie Slaney called for the university to install lights around the lake following the incident.

Ms Slaney says: “We need lights round our lake.

“Taking into account the high frequency of people who walk around Reading’s Whiteknights Campus lake at all hours of the day and especially after the recent awful incident, I think we should start urging the university to realise that proper lighting around the lake walkways is a necessity.”

A university spokesperson said “Speculation around the circumstances of the tragic situation on campus is disrespectful.”

Supt Stan Gilmour said: “Our thoughts continue to remain with the family and friends of Daniel Williams as they come to terms with what has happened.”

President Jason Dabydoyal, said: “We have been providing support and space available for students affected and are grateful for the police, our students and the public for sharing the appeals for information.”
