A NatWest customer was told “Vegans should be punched in the face” during a call to the company.
The woman, who is a vegan herself, was calling the bank in reference to a loan she was taking out. She was applying for a £400 loan to fund a educational course, which was rudely declined, but after listening to a recording of the call, NatWest offered to pay for the course. The bank said the outburst (which came after the woman told the bank worker she was a vegan) was “wholly inappropriate”.
The bank worker, who is now facing disciplinary action, became upset after the woman revealed she was vegan. He commented on chalk drawings like the picture below being left on his road, and how it infuriated him. He then went on to pass the comment about punching.
The woman claims that the encounter made her feel targeted and uncomfortable, and that she shouldn’t be made to feel that way simply because of her lifestyle. Since then, NatWest have paid her a few hundred pounds in compensation, and punished the employee accordingly.
