It looks like it’s not only the beleaguered Teressa May who is having trouble controlling Parliament, the same thing is happening in Austria, all be it for differing reasons.  While Mrs may is suffering due to Brexit woes and what some would argue a pretty poor showing as PM, the crisis in Austria is due to a corruption scandal involving Russia. This has led to the Freedom Party (FPÖ) quitting the coalition leaving the Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz facing a no-confidence vote in parliament on Monday and his ruling centre-right People’s Party (ÖVP) has only 62 seats in the 183-seat parliament.

The scandal – “Ibiza-gate” arose from a video recorded on the Spanish island allegedly showing far-right leader Heinz-Christian Strache drinking at a villa with FPÖ parliament group leader Johann Gudenus in the presence of a woman introduced as “”Alyona Makarova” the niece of a Russian Oligarch. During the evening’s conversation, Mr Strache appears to propose offering her public contracts if she agrees to buys a large stake in the Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung – and then changes its editorial policy to support his Party. Christian Strache has resigned on the news, however, it has not stopped the effective collapse of the government and possibly worse for him it has caused his wife to walk out on him.

. Elections were due in September, but these may be brought forward depending on the result of Monday’s vote.
