German national and pretend heiress Anna Sorokin has been found guilty of theft of services and grand larceny, having conned her way into receiving more than $200,000 in the way of goods and luxury accommodation and travel. She will now serve between 4-12 years less the 18 months or so already served in the notorious Rikers Island jail.  Although it is impossible not to condemn her actions, which read more like a delusional social media influenced millennials fantasy, the sentence seems a bit extreme given she will also have to pay back all the money ($199,000)and a $24,000 fine on top.

Anna Sorkin even hired a private Jet during her 4 year stint as a pretend Billionaire.

Given that she had managed to infiltrate New York’s higher society even attending elite parties and the fact she managed to fool them for 4 years!  the sentence looks to have included an embarrassment penalty, given that the United States Sentencing Commissions recent Quick Facts Paper on Theft, Property Destruction & Fraud Offences indicates that the average Loss in a case prosecuted in 2017 was around $148K and the average sentence imposed was in the 22-24 month range.

Still, she didn’t really help herself too much by working with a stylist, Anastasia Walker, to create her courtroom look during the trial! This may yet pay dividends though as Netflix is reportedly optioning her story. Now that should be something to see!
