German Chancellor Angela Merkel has bid a somewhat drawn-out farewell to German politics announcing that she will step down in 2021. This may be a shrewd move on her part as a series of regional election setbacks indicate that she might not have had any choice. She has always tried to steer the centre ground, however recently the moderate left and Far right have been attracting support and this looks like a desperate move of party appeasement to us.
