British television icon David Attenborough has broken a social media world record – being the fastest person to reach 1 million followers on Instagram.

The 94 year old joined the social media site this month, and managed to reach the 1 million followers milestone in a mere 4 hours and 44 minutes – which is world record by the way.

The previous record holder was as Jennifer Anniston, who got to a million in just over 5 hours.

His first, very fitting, video was to do with climate change, and the first story post was from the people behind the account – who explained social media isn’t second nature to David like it is for many of us, so they’re running the account and relaying his messages.

Account runners Collin Butfield and Johnnie Hughes worked with Sir David on “A Life On Our Planet“, which an upcoming Netflix documentary many people are excited for.

The pair explained: “Social media isn’t David’s usual habitat so while he’s recorded messages solely for Instagram, like the one in this post, we’re helping to run this account.”

David featured in the video posted to his Instagram; the one talking about climate change. He has previously spoken about how there is still time to change the fate of the planet, but we are limited on time.

In the video he explained: “I’ve been appearing on radio and television for the past 60 years, but this is my first time on Instagram.

“As we all know, the world is in trouble. Continents are on fire. Glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying. Fish are disappearing from our oceans. The list goes on.

“But we know what to do about it so that’s why I’m tackling this new way – for me – of communication.

“Over the next few weeks I’ll be recording messages to explain what the problems are and how we can deal with them.

“Join me, or as we used to say in those early days of radio – stay tuned.”

We will Sir David, we will.
