Festival bosses have said that the well known Glastonbury festival may not return until 2022 at the earliest.

The many people who were looking forward to celebrating the festivals 50th anniversary this year were let down when it was announced that it would be cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Michael Eavis, the festivals founder, said despite the whole glastonbury team being hard at work, it may not be possible for the festival to return by next year.

Speaking on ITV News, he said: “500 people is OK, isn’t it? But my job, 250,000 altogether is too many people I suppose, isn’t it really?

“I’m still hoping I’m going to be running next year and I’m going to be moving heaven and earth to make sure that we do. But that doesn’t mean it will necessarily happen. That is just wishful thinking really.
“The only certainty I think is the year after – 2022, to be perfectly candid, so we might have to wait for two years maybe.

“But I am still hoping and we are fighting and working at it all the time to make sure it happens next year.”

He also mentioned how the festival will come back stronger than ever, when it does finally return. Sometimes being made to wait for things makes what you’re waiting for even better; so a delayed return may not be all that bad, because if they’re using the time they have wisely, and it does finally return in 2 years, the festival will be better than ever, just like Eavis said.

He concluded: “You can’t kill it off just like that. It will come back – probably stronger, actually.”
