Algeria rode their luck to win the Africa Cup of Nations for the second time beating Senegal 1-0. The winning goal came from a deflected shot in the second minute and this turned out to be the only attempt at goal the Algerians would have.  The final in Cairo won’t live long in the memory of those of us who watched it, and the Premier League stars who were expected to light up the occasion all failed to even glimmer in a game which was ultimately won by Algeria’s stout defence.

Senegal will feel a touch ard done by having a penalty decision overturned by VAR (one which we have seen given) and despite dominating for long stretches they couldn’t turn the possession into clear chances. They had 12 shots at goal but only three were on target and both Liverpool’s Sadio Mane & Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez looked to be feeling the effects of a long season.

So despite being one of Africa’s most successful international teams (world Cup Wise anyway) Senegal will have to wait another four years to try and make it 3rd time lucky – they also lost in 2002 final.
