After more than 30 years of military rule, Sudan may finally be nearing a return to civilian governing after the ruling military council and opposition leaders signed a power-sharing accord. The country was effectively ruled by President Omar al-Bashir from 1989 following a military Coup and despite his removal recently the Military have continued to hold the reins of power.

All that may have changed thanks to the agreement which will rotate control of the sovereign council for just over three years before elections take place to decide on the new leadership.

The proposed interim council will be made up of five civilians, five military figures, and an 11th civilian person elected by the other 10. For the first 21 months, the Council will have a military general in charge after which a civilian leader will take over for the 18-month run-up to open elections.

The last few months have been marred by violent protests and mass shootings by the military, who are looking for immunity from prosecution from the atrocities committed.

There is still a long way to go but this is a positive step in ensuring stability in the region.
