With the largest known oil reserves on the planet, Venezuela should be a rich and prosperous nation, however, it is on the verge of collapsing into chaos and in what sounds more like the plot for a B movie Opposition MPs have been forced to seek refuge in the Argentine and Italian embassies after being stripped of their political immunity. They are being charged with conspiracy, rebellion and treason by the President Nicolás Maduro, a former bus driver, who retained power in a highly disputed election in 2018. This led to Juan Guaidó the opposition leader declaring himself leader a status accepted by over 50 countries including the US. Obviously, this has not gone down well and after Juan Guaidó tried to get the military to support his claim things hit the fan.  Right now the Military hold sway in the country and they support President Maduro. As we said you couldn’t make this up, but while the power struggle continues the poverty and human rights abuses will continue, although it is far from certain that things would improve if there was a change in leadership.
