Faith healer Joao Teixeira de Faria, also known as “John of God”, who is accused of abusing 300 women, has handed himself in after an arrest warrant was issued on Friday. He is accused of a number of sexual assaults on women with the latest victim accusing him of manipulating her into performing certain acts.
Mr Faria, who is not a qualified doctor, has previously been jailed for operating without a licence and it will be interesting to see how the trial goes as he is certainly guilty of abuse of position but there is no evidence of force or coercion in his alleged actions. The news that he withdrew 35 million Reais ($8.9m) from his bank accounts should ensure that plenty of compensation claims are forthcoming if he is found guilty.
