Five easy ways to make your house feel brighter

When the days get shorter and darker, it’s easy to feel like your home isn’t as bright anymore. But with these simple tips, you can turn that around in no time!

Open the blinds.

Open the blinds. I know this seems obvious but it is something many people forget to do. Do you know what’s better than feeling like you’re in a dark cave or a prison cell? Feeling like you’re outside! This is a no-brainer for many people, but it should be on your list if you aren’t already doing this. Try opening your blinds during the day, too—the natural light from outside will help brighten up your space. If you like privacy look for thin netted curtains that allow a level of privacy that doesn’t sacrifice light.

Breathe fresh air and let in some sunshine! If opening your blinds isn’t enough to fill up all of those empty spaces in your house, then consider letting some fresh air into the mix as well by cracking open windows or turning on ceiling fans that will circulate cool breezes throughout every room.

Paint your walls white.

Painting your walls white is one of the easiest ways to make your house feel brighter. White walls have a way of reflecting light, making rooms seem bigger and brighter. They’re also a great backdrop for decorating—you can really let your creativity shine when you have such a blank canvas! If you’d like to create an art wall, try painting the vertical surface of each wall with a different colour or pattern so that it looks like it was created by an artist instead of being thrown together by chance. Even if you don’t want to go all out with colours, try just painting one wall in your living room white; this will create an interesting contrast between the rest of the room and its focal point!

Use mirrors.

Mirrors are a great way to make your house feel bigger, lighter and airier. They can reflect light into a room, which makes the space appear brighter. Mirrors also reflect natural light from outside as well as artificial light from lamps or other sources in the house. This helps brighten up dark corners of rooms that are often unused or forgotten about completely by homeowners who don’t want to spend money on expensive fixtures like chandeliers or ceiling lights just for those areas of the home.

Mirrors are practical because they’re relatively inexpensive (you probably already have them) and easy to install; however, keep in mind that if you’re looking at buying new ones for this purpose then opt for frames made from metal instead of glass so they won’t break when someone bumps into them during an active playtime with your kids!

Install new lighting fixtures.

  • Replace old lighting fixtures.
  • Go with LED lights.
  • They’re more energy-efficient, last longer, and are more natural-looking than other types of artificial light.

Switch to lighter pieces of furniture.

  • Switch to lighter pieces of furniture, such as white and light wood. Or try out a light-coloured leather, plastic or glass table.
  • Replace dark curtains with lighter ones for better sunlight exposure and let the good vibes in!
  • If you’re feeling really bold (and have no small children who might get into trouble) go ahead and paint your walls with a bright hue that makes people feel good when they see it!

Your house can feel a lot lighter (and brighter) with just a few changes.

  • Open the blinds. Keep your windows open during warm weather to let in more light, or open the curtains if it’s cold out. If you’re unable and/or unwilling to do these things, at least crack a window so that some extra light gets in (and also so that CO2 doesn’t build up).
  • Paint your walls white. White walls are known as “the most flattering hue on skin tones,” according to interior designer Elle Décor magazine Editor-in-Chief Mary McDonald, and they also make rooms feel brighter and larger than they really are! If you aren’t sure what colour will suit your needs best, paint an entire room using a lighter shade before committing yourself to anything darker or more vibrant.
  • Use mirrors strategically around the house (but not too many). Mirrors reflect light and create an illusion of space—they can even make small spaces look bigger than they actually are! This can help brighten up rooms by making them appear larger than they actually are…. but remember: too many mirrors becomes visually confusing for humans because it creates multiple reflections rather than one cohesive image; instead, keep them limited to three or four per room at most

Give it a try

There are so many ways that you can make your house feel brighter, and these five ideas are just the beginning. With a few simple changes in colour and lighting, you’re well on your way to a more cheerful home.
