Here is why you should not throw your mascara wands away…

Once we get to the end of a mascara we automatically throw it away as we think we can not use them again. From a single Facebook post we know know this is in fact incorrect.

A company called ‘Chrome Events UK’ posted on Facebook to appeal for people to not throw away their mascara wands, instead they advised to clean them with warm soapy water and post them to a wildlife rescue centre. Mascara wants can help clean away oil, larvae, fly eggs, mites, infections, mud and other contaminants from wildlife. Works great for medical care and wound treatment.

It was first promoted by Wands for Wildlife who have made a whole campaign and organisation to promote the idea. The wands replace the grooming that animals would receive from their parents.

New Arc Animal Rescue Centre, Aberdeenshire have received an overwhelming amount of mascara wands that will go to help lots of injured and young animals that enter their rescue centre.

Kevin Newell, who helps care for the animals at the New Arc Animal Rescue Centre, Aberdeenshire, told BBC Scotland of the successful appeal: “We have been inundated – we have got more wands here than in Hogwarts.

“The mascara brushes are cleaned, and we get them ready for the baby season. They are usually orphaned.

“If using on a small rabbit it’s fantastic as they are so fine, it removes mites and dust, and once that grooming process is in place it’s a bonding thing.

“It’s like parental care. It keeps them clean, happy and healthy.”
