Makeup foundation guide

There are many foundation types and they all can be overwhelming when you go to pick one out. Different foundations can work out better for each skin type some will work for all, if you want your foundation to suit your skin and be flawless read this guide to find your perfect foundation.

Before picking your foundation, you need to work out what coverage you are wanting. There are three main types of coverages these are light, medium and full. Each one brings a different look to your face. Light coverage is perfect if you just want to even out your skin tone, it will not cover imperfections, but it will give you the illusion of skin. Medium coverage will give you a more coverage whilst not looking to heavy. Medium coverage helps to cover your imperfections, depending on the imperfection they may still be seen but will not look as noticeable as usual. Full coverage is used to cover every imperfection you have, it is used by makeup artists to camouflage tattoos or make a blank canvas on your face. It can be used everyday for people who like to cover their skin and have that level of coverage; full coverage is very noticeable.

Liquid foundation.

Liquid foundation is the most common type of foundation and is probably the most popular. It can come in many different formulas and consistencies; liquid foundations can suit any type of skin as they can come in formulas such as oil free or hydrating. You can get foundations in different types of coverages such as light, medium or full coverage. These types of foundations comes in many different finishes such as mattes, dewy or satin; it is best if you have dry skin to stay away from matte finishes as they can make your skin more dry (they will be best with normal to oily skin), dewy foundations are best for people with dry to normal skin and satin finishes can be used with any skin type as it is a mixture of all types. It is all about your personal preference as there is no rules to makeup.  Liquid foundations can be applied with just about anything – makeup sponges, brushes or even your fingers.

Cream foundations.

Cream foundations normally come in a compact and are very pigmented (they have high/full coverage). This type of foundation is for people that may like thick and ultra-full coverage, they are popular for people who do camouflaging (this is covering up tattoo or skin insecurities). Cream foundations are noticeable to the eye and are not the best for people that have oily skin because they can exaggerate shine and may make your pores look larger than they are. It is also not the best for dry skin as it shows dry patches up more. Cream foundations work best if you apply them with a brush or makeup sponge, a makeup sponge will be the best to apply with as it helps to make the foundation look natural and sit on your skin better.

Stick foundations.

This type of foundation comes in stick form and is good for quick applications. Stick foundations normally give a medium to full coverage and is very similar to cream foundations. They are not the best for oily skin as they can make shine more obvious and may separate. Unlike cream foundations they can work for dry skin as you can control how much you put on your face therefore you can control your coverage amount. An advantage of stick foundations are they are an easy, clean and quick way to apply foundation, it is probably one of the quickest foundations you will find as it is direct. A downside to stick foundations are they have a thick consistency and not always easy to blend if they are not warmed up. This foundation can be blended out with a makeup sponge or a brush.

Whipped/mousse foundation.

This type of foundation is normally in a small jar and has a very full coverage than other foundations; however, mouse foundations are light weight and has an air like quality to it, it can be compared to whipped cream. Mousse/whipped foundations are good for combination and textured skin, it will give a medium to full coverage also. These are not so popular now, but the Maybelline dream liquid mousse foundation was very popular foundation a few years back, but they did not have a good shade range.

Powder foundation.

Powder foundation are usually pressed into a compact and are buildable coverage. They are an easy to apply and are excellent for all skin types. They can be used alone or used over your normal foundation to build up coverage and to set the foundation in place. Powder foundations are easy to touch up through out the day as all you need is a brush and a mirror. Powder foundations are also good for people that have oily skin as the powder can absorb excess oils on the skin, it is also good for dry skin as it will not show up dry patches of skin and will not make the skin drier. The only downside to powder foundation is it can look very powdery and noticeable.

Mineral foundation.

Mineral foundation is light weight and good for light to medium coverage, they are easy to use, and you only need a brush to apply. The most common mineral foundation is by bareMinerals, they have many shades for everyone and are perfect for an everyday look. Mineral foundations are good for people that have sensitive skin as it is chemical free with no fragrance in, so it cannot irate skin.
