World Boxing Organisation world light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev has managed to secure his title against Anthony Yarde and even managed to knock him out in the 11th round, a lot of fans will say that Anthony Yarde never really had great fights and never had a chance to fight anyone as good as Sergey Kovalev, however now that he won this bout… he could be on the way to securing a fight with a middleweight fighter: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez! This is a strange fight since Canelo will have to go up two divisions to fight the light heavyweight champion, however it’s hard to believe that this deal has almost been finalised!
No deal is done yet, however there won’t be a fight between Gennady Golovkin and Saul Alvarez this fall at all since Kovalev is on Canelo and DAZNs Wishlist. The fight that was cancelled on the 14th September for Canelo was going to be this fight, however Kovalev’s mandatory against Yarde was going to be very hard to get out of so they had to cancel talks so Anthony Yardes could get his fight before Canelo gets his chance. As of right now, Canelo only wants to fight Kovalev and he is the current target right now.
The reason why this hasn’t been all over the news is because both Canelo and his promoters, Golden Boy Promotions, agreed they would wait and see what happens in the Kovalev v Yardes fight before going into anything, however it’s the main target now and Canelo will have to go up two weight classes to fight the light heavyweight champion very soon. They are hoping for the fight to be on November 4th however nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
