Jon Jones features this weekend at UFC 235 from Las Vegas, as he defends his light heavyweight title against Anthony Smith. When he returned to competition at the end of last year, Jones was unable to get a licence to fight in Nevada, however, he has now agreed terms with the state athletic commission and his first defence of the year is good to go! Many feel that, at his best, this contest against Smith should be a relatively straight forward affair, but nothing can be taken for granted in this sport, and Smith is the number one contender with knockout victories over Rashad Evens and Mauricio Rua, so does have a pedigree of his own.
The co-main event features a welterweight matchup between Tyron Woodley and Kamaru Usman, which is Woodley’s first defence of the year, following his previous four. Others on the card, notably Robbie Lawler and Ben Askren will be watching on with interest, after their own bout. Usman is currently undefeated in the Octagon and will be looking to move to the next level and claim the belt. Many had thought that Woodley would take on Colby Covington, who was the interim champion, however, UFC President Dana White announced Covington was no longer the holder of that title as he had turned down a fight due to a surgery
