A large number of business leaders in the UK are once again lobbying for a second vote on the UK’s decision to leave the European Union. The rationale seems to be that they were promised frictionless trade with the EU if we left, and now years down the track they still haven’t made any strategic changes to accommodate what could be a new reality. Most surprising was the comments made to the BBC by Waterstones chief executive James Daunt who reportedly says  “All the paper we use is imported. We rely on just-in-time methods and now there are multiple uncertainties.” As a book retailer, it is not clear just how much paper they use or why they couldn’t source it elsewhere given that only Germany, Sweden & Finland from the European Union are in the Worlds top 10 paper producers and they combined produce less than half of China’s output.

No matter how much they complain it is highly unlikely that there will be a second referendum, and the time currently spent hand-wringing would be better spent preparing for whatever happens next.
