Kennel Club (UK) Dog Breeds: Gundog Group

The Gundog breed is one of the general dog groups recognised by the Kennel Club UK (as of 2021), and of the 221 breeds of dogs accepted by them, 38 fall into this category. Like all dogs, this group was selectively bred to fulfil a specific purpose, and in their case, the group name is pretty self-explanatory. Overall there are seven groups recognised by the Kennel Club: Toy, Utility, Gundog, Working, Pastoral, Terrier, and Hound, and you can find links to these by scrolling down.

Gundog dogs were initially bred for hunting and were trained to find and/or to retrieve game after it had been shot and wounded. There are four sub-groups within the group: Retrievers, Spaniels, Pointers, and Setters. However, many of the breeds within the group are capable of doing the same work as those breeds within any of the sub-groups. Today hunting is not so widespread and in general, gundogs are kept as family pets, where their good temperament and general ease of training make them great companions.
