
The American Kennel Club (AKC) currently (2019) recognises 21 Toy Dog breeds amongst the 193 they recognise in total. All dog breeds have been consigned to one of seven groups, according to factors such as size, shape, function and temperament. Slightly unusually the Manchester Terrier is recognised in both the Toy Group and the Terrier Group.

Toy breeds are a small companion or lap dogs and although many have been bred for the purpose, although some have been placed into this category simply due to their size. They generally have a friendly demeanour and love attention. They don’t need too much exercise but some can be fussy eaters. The American Kennel Club currently recognises 21 Toy breeds in total; these being:

The seven dog groups recognised by the American Kennel Club are; Toy, Herding, Sporting, Non-sporting, Working, Terrier and Hound. This differs slightly from the UK Kennel Club which lists them as Gundog, Pastoral, Working, Hound, Utility, Terrier & Toy. There are however some differences between the breeds recognised in each of the relevant club’s groups.
