
The Question of Citizenship has not been present on the US Census since 1950 and despite the efforts by the Trump administration, this will continue at least past 2020. The Supreme Court finally put a block on this however given President Trump’s whole election campaign rests on stoking national feelings don’t expect the matter of citizenship to go away any time soon.

Looking at this objectively we are at a loss to see what there would be to gain from asking the question – did he think that any illegal immigrants would fill in a form effectively asking them to confirm their status? All it would serve to do would be to make people who are legally in the US worried that their status would be raised above the parapet by answering and so make them less likely to complete the census. This could lead to mass under-reporting, and given that most legal immigrants live in poorer neighbourhoods less per capita funding for them.
Maybe this was all a ruse to cut state funding to the poorer areas?
