The gunman injured at least 20 people, he also abandoned his car and stole a US postal vehicle. Police later shot the gunman dead and officials have said that they believe there was no connection to terrorism. The motive of the gunman is unclear.

On Sunday Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke said that those killed in the shooting were aged 15 to 57.

The incident began just after 15:00 after two Texas Department of Public Safety officers pulled over a vehicle on a Midland highway. The driver then opened fire on the officers before driving away and shooting at random people in several locations.

“The active shooter was shot and killed at the Cinergy in Odessa,” Midland police said on Facebook, referring to a multiplex cinema in Odessa.

The shooting comes after 22 people were killed at a Walmart store  in the Texas city of El Paso on 2 August. Last week, Texas governor Greg Abbott held two meetings with lawmakers about how to prevent more mass shootings in Texas.
