A former suspect in the 1993 racist murder of Stephen Lawrence has been attacked days into his jail sentence.

MET POLICE
Jamie Acourt

Jamie Acourt was jailed for conspiracy to supply “huge quantities” of cannabis resin. The 42-year-old was punched by another inmate on December 12th, he did not need hospital treatment. He has been jailed for nine years. The conspiracy to supply class B was committed between of 1 January 2014 and 2 May 2015.

A spokesperson said:  “A prisoner at HMP Wandsworth has been put on report after punching a fellow prisoner.”

The sentencing  brings to an end a lengthy plus complex investigation by the Met’s Organised Crime Command. The investigation first launched in 2014 and resulted in six men being convicted for their roles in the conspiracy. The gang was said to be very intelligent and careful when planning or recruiting.

Officers also seized 100 kilos of cannabis and £40,000 in cash, five men were subsequently convicted and sentenced for their part in the conspiracy, in February 2017.

Jamie Acourt was never convicted of the racist attack on Stephen Lawrence and has always denied involvement. In 2012, Gary Dobson and David Norris were convicted of murdering Stephen Lawrence and were jailed for life.

The National Crime Agency’s Regional Head of International Operations, Steve Reynolds, said: “Jamie Acourt was tracked down to Barcelona following an intensive intelligence-led search operation involving the NCA, Metropolitan Police and our law enforcement partners in Spain. I’m delighted that today he has been brought to justice.

“His conviction and sentencing sends out a message that we are relentless in our pursuit of wanted fugitives, we have the international reach to track you down, and no matter where you go you will never be able to stop looking over your shoulder.”
