Another Terrorist Bombing In Egypt

A tourist bus carrying mainly South African visitors was badly damaged when hit by a roadside bomb today. The explosion which appears to have deliberately targetted the bus has injured at least 16 people who were visiting the pyramids in Giza. This was very close to the soon to open  Grand Egyptian Museum, Which it is hoped will become a major tourist attraction. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, however, this will throw up question marks regarding the adequacy of the security measures undertaken in such a key tourist location.

Nothing New

No one has claimed responsibility for the bombing but Islamist militants have a track record of attacking tourists in Egypt. In December, three Vietnamese tourists and a local tour guide were killed in a bomb attack targetting their bus, and in 2015 Metrojet Flight 9268 was downed by Islamist terrorists killing 224. This seriously damaged Egypt’s tourist industry and the latest attacks will dampen the fragile recovery which was in place.

African Cup Of Nations

Egypt is due to host Africas most prestigious Football tournament the Cup of Nations, which had already been moved from Cameroon due in part to terrorist actions. This will put added pressure on the authorities as an attack during these could irreparably damage the countries Tourist operations for many years ahead.
