President Trump Peeved By Ambassadors Comments

President Trump has taken to his favourite platform Twitter to respond to Ambassador Sir Kim Darroch’s embarrassing leaked secret (or not so as the case proved) cables in which he made damning observations on Mr Trump and his administration. To be fair the observations could have been worded a little less vehemently even if they were just repeating the rhetoric which abounds on social media. The outcome is that he is no longer welcomed by the US administration and Theresa May has been crossed off the X-Mas card list too for doing the honourable thing and standing by him. The Queen will probably get one though.

The good news is that Sir Kim Darroch’s days as US Ambassador were numbered anyway and despite his petulance, it is unlikely to have any lasting ramifications for US UK relations.

It does, however, throw up a couple of issues:

How did supposedly secret government communications find there way so easily into the public domain? This doesn’t instil a lot of confidence in the incumbent departments or the rigour of current security procedures.

What was the Mail on Sunday thinking – with the country facing probably its biggest peacetime issue with Brexit, was now really the time to go public with this. The negative views on the Trump administration held by some are hardly new and publishing them could have alienated our closest ally at a time when with a no-deal exit looming we may need them the most. We are all for the freedom of the press but timing & journalistic ethics should have been screaming out this is a bad move – oh sorry I forgot it is the Mail we are talking about!
