Over half of UK adults aged 65 and over are now shopping online, 54% of over 64’s are now choosing to shop online according to the Office For National Statistics (ONS). This is the first time it has reached over 50%.

Across all adults more than four in five (82%) have bought goods or services online, this is up by 5% in the last 12 months. Out of the adults who shop online 44% have spent between £100 and £499 in the last three months and 15% have spent over £1,00.

The growth in online shopping results in the increase of how many adults are using internet but also the decrease in high street stores. According to ONS 87% of adults use the internet daily and more than eight in ten use the web on the go via smartphone, tablet or any other hand held device.

According to a report one in 10 stores were left empty in July this is the highest number since January 2015. High streets stores are struggling to compete against online brands and many are going into administration. British high streets lost a record of 2,481 shops in 2018, following years of high street decline.
