Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley who is no stranger to controversy has suggested to MPs that the “internet is killing the High Street” and recommends levying yet another tax on online retailers, which would once again fall heaviest on those who are on lower incomes and need to shop around. Most of the large retailers already have substantial online operations so its hard to see how this would benefit the high street as a whole and collecting the tax would be an administrative nightmare. It is also not clear where the tax revenue would go, so giving the Government another opportunity to slip in a stealth tax is never a good idea. Looks like a move to try and deflect attention away from his House of Fraser takeover.

The best way to save the high street is to make it more affordable for small speciality shops to operate and make parking cheaper and more available.
