Hurricane Dorian has caused heavy rain which is hitting the south-eastern seaboard of the US. Dorian is now a category one storm and has left thousands of homes in North and South Carolina without any power. Forecasters have now warned that some areas may experience dangerous storm surges.
A category one storm is classified as ” expected to produce some minor damage to property. Injuries to people and animals are generally isolated and limited to flying or falling debris. During a Category 1 storm, protected glass windows generally remain intact. Some roof damage to frame homes, apartments, and shopping centers can also occur, as well as short-term power outages due to snapped power lines and downed trees.”
Officials say in South Carolina, more than 250,000 homes and businesses in coastal areas were left without power.
