The already toxic political environment in Ethiopia took another nasty turn with the assassination of first the Amhara regional governor Ambachew Mekonnen who was killed along with an adviser, followed a few hours later by the chief of staff of the Ethiopian army, General Seare Mekonnen.

General Mekonnen was shot along with Gen, Gezai Abera at his residence in the Capital Addis Ababa by his own Bodyguard while according to PM Abiy Ahmed, trying to prevent a Coup. Several arrests have been made including the Bodyguard, and the blame has been laid on former General Asaminew Tsige one of a number of high-ranking military officers released from prison early last year. He had been in custody for nine years for allegedly plotting a coup.

Everything is currently reported as being under control, however with ethnic tensions and obvious military discontent with the current government Ethiopia, which is the second largest country in Africa by population, is in danger of tipping into strife which will have dire consequences for the civilian population already plagued by youth unemployment.
