The Egyptian authorities are facing international scrutiny following the sudden death of former President Mohammed Morsi who died on Monday after collapsing in open court. Morsi was the first ever democratically elected leader of Egypt back in 2012, however, his reign was short and he has been under arrest since being forcibly removed from office via a Military coup back in 2013. Surprise surprise Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, a former army chief, took power and remains the countries leader.

Human rights groups have long been critical of the conditions under which he was kept,  have called for an impartial investigation into his death and a forensic report had been ordered into his death, however, this is all moot now given that the Authorities have buried him within hours of his death. Ex President Morsi was only 67 when he died either of a stroke or a heart attack depending on which report you read.

Egypt’s human rights record is pretty appalling and they were not great under President Mohammed Morsi’s brief rule either, however, the recent re-election of Al-Sisi was spurious, to say the least, and hundreds of people have died and tens of thousands detained in the subsequent crackdowns on dissidents.
