The inaptly named Democratic Republic Congo which has not had a peaceful, democratic transfer of power since gaining independence from Belgium in 1960 has had a setback with the loss of nearly 8000 of the electronic voting machines needed for the capital Kinshasa.

The voting to elect a successor to President Joseph Kabila should have happened 2 years ago but elections have been repeatedly delayed and dozens of opposition supporters have been killed in protests.

The exiting president is backing his former Interior Minister, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, in the election and the main opposition leader is Felix Tshisekedi.
