A “well developed and intense” fire has destroyed a four-storey block of flats in London. Around 125 firefighters were sent to flats in Sherbrooke Way, Worcester Park, when the fire broke out in the early hours of Monday morning.

The fire spread quickly to all four floors and is now under control however, the crews will remain at the flats today. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Graham Adams, from London Fire Brigade, said: “This is a challenging fire and firefighters are working hard to bring the blaze under control.

“Firefighters will remain on scene for a number of hours and we would urge people to avoid the area if possible.”

London Ambulance Service said: “We have not treated any patients, however we remain on the scene as a precaution.”

Sutton Council said it had officers on the site who were “supporting anybody that needs help”.

Around 29 calls were made about the fire, luckily no one was injured in the fire. People who live close to the flats have been evacuated as thick smoke continues to spread.

Residents from other parts of the estate have been bringing bags of clothing and bedding to the community centre to give to people of the flats who have lost everything.
