More Chaos On The Rails

German State-owned Train Operator Arriva has joined FTSE250 constituent Stagecoach in taking legal action over the government’s decision to award the East Midlands franchise to the Dutch government-owned firm Abellio.
The actions are relating to the opaqueness of the bidding process and in Stagecoaches case the decision to ban them from bidding on the route which they were running. The line operates routes north to south between Yorkshire and London, and east to west as far as Norwich and Liverpool.
The Department of Transport has granted Abellio the franchise for eight years, starting in August, which will add to their other rail franchises, including Scotrail and the Greater Anglia services between Norwich and London.
Given the poor service UK commuters get from the incumbent rail providers and the issues which may arise post-Brexit it seems strange that the Conservative Government continues to grant control of Britains railways to foreign governments, who obviously have their own national interest and are not doing this for altruistic reasons.
