Six tourists have died and 30 people injured in an aggressive storm which has swept across the region of northern Greece. Strong winds and hail it the Halkidiki region in Greece on Wednesday. The winds were so strong there were cars overturned, fallen trees, mudslides and broken roofs. The storm only lasted around 20 minutes .

 

A Czech couple died when their caravan was blown away, two Romanians and two Russians were also killed. A mother and child were also killed after an outdoor restaurant’s lean-to roof collapsed. A state of emergency was declared and more than 100 rescue workers were sent out.

Athansios Kaltsas, director of the Nea Moudania Medical Centre, said: “It is the first time in my 25-year career that I have lived through something like this. It was so abrupt, and so sudden.”

The storms comes after a spell of  37C heat in Greece over the past two days. 

Greece’s minister for citizen protection, Michalis Chryssohoidis, is due to visit the region on Thursday.

“I want to express my sorrow on behalf of all … We mourn for the loss of these souls,” said the citizen protection minister, Michalis Chrisochoidis, overseeing operations in the area. “We are in solidarity with their relatives, with the people who have lost their families.”

According to the Port Police a fisherman in his 60s is missing.
