
A state of emergency has been declared in Florida as it braces for a hurricane which is expected to grow stronger before it hits Florida. Hurricane Dorian has passed most of the Caribbean and did not cause much damage. However, it is predicted to reach Florida in three days time and be much stronger.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami warned of dangerous storm surge and hurricane-force winds but said “it is too soon to determine where these hazards will occur”.

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for the whole of the state. Mr DeSantis has urged people living on the east coast to load up with at least seven days’ worth of supplies, such as food and water, adding: “All indications are that by this Labour Day weekend, a powerful hurricane will be near or over the Florida peninsula.”

Residents from Florida’s east coast have been piling up food in the supermarkets and filling up their cars with fuel. Florida Power and Light, said it had activated an emergency response plan in case the storm’s impact is strong. This means around 13,000 employees and additional personnels will respond to damaged power lines and equipment.

President Donald Trump has now issued an emergency declaration for the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico is still struggling to recover from back-to-back hurricanes in 2017 which killed around 3,000 people and destroyed houses. Many people are still leaving in temporary shelters.
