What ‘clean beauty’ really means…

Clean beauty has not got an exact definition but it is basically a product which is safe to use and has effective formulations, it only uses ingredients which benefit the skin without being harmful or pointless. It is all about what is good for your skin. However, ‘clean beauty’ does not always mean it is has no preservatives it just means there is a healthy amount.

The terms ‘Clean’ and ‘Green’ can get mixed up or made out to be the same but they are actually different. ‘Clean’ includes non-toxic and non-controversial products that are proven to be safe and effective. ‘Green’ are natural, organic products that are made of natural products. So clean is not all natural ingredients, it is just safe for the skin and does not include many harmful ingredients where as, green is 100% natural ingredients and is all organic.

Products which are ‘clean’ should not contain fragrance, parabens, phthalates, SLES and SLS, mineral oil, formaldehyde or lead.  Parabens are preservatives that make a product last longer and SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) is a surfactant that helps remove oils and allows foams to form.

Silicones are a valuable and desired for cosmetic formulations, they are non-irritating products are not animal derived therefore they are approved by vegans. Silicones benefit the skin in many ways therefore they are a clean product for clean beauty.

Clean beauty does differ from natural beauty as natural ingredients can be toxic. Clean beauty is all about safe products so this is what makes it so different. Harmful ingredients can led to health effects such as cancer and hormone disruption this is why it is important to only us products with clean ingredients.

Brands that are ‘clean beauty’ are  May Lindstrom, Weleda, True Botanicals, Uma, Balmyard, Juice Beauty, Tammy Fender, Herbivore. There are also many others and the list is endless.
