Burberry wants to go plastic-free by 2025

British fashion house, Burberry, is taking the next step and are going plastic free by 2025!

The plans are to eliminate all unnecessary plastic packaging by 2025. Burberry will use packaging that is reusable, recyclable or compostable.

The news has been released by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation which is a charity to push brands’ transition to a circular economy.

The brand will replace the plastic from its retail bags and poly bags for garment covers, this will reduce at least 29 tons of plastics.

By the end of the year the brand also has plans to replace all current hangers, shrouds and poly-bags with an eco friendly alternatives, they will be offering customers the chance to recycle unwanted hangers. Burberry are working towards a environmentally responsible future; last year they announced they were discontinuing the use of real fur in their collections alongside the wasteful destroying unsaleable products.

Other companies committed to reducing their plastic packaging include L’Oréal, Nestlé, Walmart and Target.

Consumer goods companies and retailers commit to increase recycled content in their packaging to an average of 25% by 2025. Leading businesses will end the use of problematic and unnecessary plastic including PVC and single-use plastic straws and carrier bags.

New Plastics Economy lead Sander Defruyt said: “The targets and action plans set out in this report are a significant step forward compared with the pace of change of past decades. However, they are still far from truly matching the scale of the problem, particularly when it comes to the elimination of unnecessary items and innovation towards reuse models. Ambition levels must continue to rise to make real strides in addressing global plastic pollution by 2025, and moving from commitment to action is crucial. Major investments, innovations, and transformation programmes need to start now.”
