The famous beauty blender is used by many and everyone still goes crazy for it. Many cannot imagine doing their makeup without it.
The sponge created a flawless base by effortlessly blending our foundation, concealer and any other liquid/gel/cream forms. However, are you using it correctly and looking after it?
Always use it wet
The founder of the BeautyBlender, Rea Ann Silva, says the sponge was always designed to be used wet. Before you use it run the sponge under the tap and then squeeze out excess water (you can do this a few times until its fully expanded), when you have squeezed all the excess water out you will be left with a damp and larger sponge. The sponge will soak up less product when damp and larger; it will make your foundation go on smoother and let it be pressed into the skin better. Here is the three steps you should take:
- Wet: Wet the beauty blender with water.
- Squeeze: Squeeze out the excess liquid, using a towel if available.
- Bounce: Foundation, powder or any other complexion product across the face for flawless results.
Always apply primer mixed with foundation to your sponge
According to the director of Makeup For Ever we should be applying our primer straight to the sponge and rather than blending it into the skin mix it with your foundation before applying to the face. She recommends applying the primer first straight to the sponge then put the foundation on top of the primer and apply to your face.
Pop your makeup onto your hands first
Another hack is to mix the product on your hand rather than sponge and then dip the sponge in and bounce the foundation into the skin to achieve the best base possible. Benefit MUA, Lisa Potter Dixon, said: “Bouncing will give you an even, airbrushed finish,” this is why the first BeautyBlender foundation was called ‘bounce’ as the best results are from bouncing the product onto your skin.
Use an elastic band
If you need to be precise when applying your makeup such as contouring or blending under the eyes take an elastic band or hair bobble and wrap it around the sponge a couple of times to create to different applicators. The smaller side can be used to do smaller areas without messing all your makeup up. The bigger side can be used for larger areas or just buy some mini beauty blenders.
Don’t throw it away
Once it is totally unusable and falling to bits you may be tempted to throw it away BUT do not as everything can be re-used and given a second chance. One way to reuse the sponge is to cut it in half and use it for ombre nail art.
Always clean your beauty blender
It is just as important to clean your beauty sponge as it is to clean your brushes. You can use many things to clean your sponge here are some of them:
- Use BeautyBlender solid/solid pro – beautyblender solid is a soap like cleaner made for sponges. All you do is wet the sponge, swirl and coat in the solid focus on the areas that are unclean. When you start to work up a lather you know it is starting to work. Now rise the sponge, make sure to squeeze to remove any sexcess cleanser (I recommend doing this a few times, so you know for sure it is fully clean). Repeat until clean and leave to air dry.
- BeautyBlender liquid cleanser – The liquid beautycleanser is just like the solid but a liquid form. It has a pump so all you have to do is place the sponge on the pump and press down to get the liquid out. Do this everywhere on the sponge (remember a little goes a long way) once it is covered work the product in by squeezing and rubbing, you should form a lather. Rise and squeeze to get all the cleanser from the sponge. Repeat until clean and leave to air dry.
- Baby shampoo – wet your sponge and cover in baby shampoo, rub the shampoo into the sponge to get all the foundation and dirt on the sponge. Rinse and continuously squeeze. Repeat until clean and leave to air dry.
