‘Greasy’ hair is the visible amount of sebum on your hair, your scalp will produce sebum to keep it healthy and moisturised. Sebum causes hair fibres to stick together and clump instead of individual fibres moving freely; it makes the hair look greasy and dirty.
Your hair can become greasy for many reasons such as over production of sebum, hair products, diet and airborne dust/pollution.
Here are your 7 tips to help your hair not get greasy so fast.
- Choose your shampoo and conditioner carefully
It is essential to select your hair products carefully, if possible, avoid products that are labelled with ‘dry’, ‘damaged’, ‘smoothing’ or ‘glossy’. They coat the hair in a fine film which is good for what it states to do but it is not so good for hair that gets greasy often. The coating will add to the oil produced and cause the hair to become dull and oily looking.
- What you eat
Your diet can have a big effect on the condition of your hair, oil in foods can make sebum increase more so it best to increase your intake of vegetables and fruit to make the hair healthier. In particular, carbohydrates and saturated fats are the main sources that increase sebum therefore your hair will become greasy if you eat many of these.
- Do not wash your hair every day
Washing your hair will get rid of the unwanted grease but over washing your hair will strip your hair of its natural oils – not good! To help your scalp your body will produce a lot more sebum to try and replace the hydration that was lost. Start washing your hair 2 or 3 times a week – your hair will thank you in the long run!
- Touching your hair too often
When you touch your hair any oils or products on your fingers/hands will transfer to your hair, so we suggest you try to not touch your hair as much and make sure to wash your hands after touching oily products.
- Ditch products that build up
Styling products can cause the scalp and strands to become clogged up. Dry shampoo is the worse for this, it is best if you stay off it as much as possible because all it does is make things worse! You may also want to detox your hair by using a clarifying shampoo 2-4 times a month to help strip all the built-up product on your hair.
- Only apply conditioner to the ends of your hair.
If you find yourself running out of conditioner faster than shampoo, you are doing it wrong. Applying conditioner all over will maker your hair become greasy faster as it’s the build up of product and dehydrates the scalp.
- Clean your hair brush
If your hair brush is full of hair it is most likely containing grease, oil and dirty. That is not what you need when brushing clean hair, they will transfer to your hair making it greasy and unclean. Hair brushes build up hair products, dust and oil greasy hair, this is why it is so important to clean them as do you really want to be using a dirty brush full of nasties on your hair?
