The German Shepherd is one of the most popular breeds around the world and are known for working with police as train dogs to help seek out drugs and protect people. They have been used for many years in the police force. They are extremely loyal and intelligent, they always let their owner known when strangers are about and can be very protective over their owners.
Due to their intelligence, they are really easy to train and within the household need a lot of mental stimulation. They also need a lot of exercise so they need to be taken on regular long walks.
The males are noticeably larger than the females and tend to be heavier. They are medium to large size dogs and are very powerful and fast dogs. These dogs are very renowned for their intelligence, alertness and loyalty. On the other they are not advised for a first-time owner, they need to be handled expertly and calmly, with a firm yet gentle hand. This dog must also know its place in the family and know that the owner is alpha if this does not happen there could be some dominant behaviours which may occur.
These dogs are good around children of all ages because they are calm and patient, but more so if they are well breed. A German Shepherd life span is between 9 to 13 years and sometimes even longer when looked after right. They also need to be fed the right food in order to stay healthy and regular health check-ups at the local vet’s.
