It Happened One Night – Trailer

The original Romantic Comedy featuring Hollywood heart throb Clark Gable and the equally charming Claudette Colbert which swept the boards at the 1934 Oscars not onlt taking best picture, but also Best Actor, Actress, Director and Screenplay. Made for a comparatively palrty $325,000 this remains one of the most iconic movies of the 1930s.

 Quick Plot

Ellie defies her father and marries gold digger Westley but is rescued by her extremely wealthy father before the marriage can be consummated. She runs away and meets up with Peter and surprise surprise falls for him (well it is Clark Gabel!). Eventually she reunites with her father who buys off Westley at the alter allowing Ellie to run off again this time with Peter. Oh we do love a happy ending.

One of the most enduring scenes is the hitch hiking one below, which has been copied many times.

@Spac3Lordz have you seen the movie? Clarke Gable doesn’t exactly play a gentlemen. He is typically portrayed as a rugged, roughish man tasked with “fixing” the emotionally desperate woman, which he does wonderfully! This movie is no different.

I simply adore this movie. Clark Gable is just divine. It’s really too bad men don’t come like that anymore. The era of gentleman is long gone and it is extremely depressing to me.

@woodrobot8 How about just not hitting women at all? Then you don’t have a problem.

@MsCasati Oh why is dames so dizzy???
Like many men I empathize with Gable, women are so overcome with emotions they seldom do anything sensible. One minute they want you to show your mastery over them by slapping them around, then they get all weepy and say you don’t understand them. Or claim you abuse them when they wanted you to be rough. And being charming is totally a matter of perspective, serial killers are often very persuasive and charming.

@Jeffieboi sex appeal to stop a car has been used over and over. that could be the origin. todays writers get a lot of credit but so often, they use a lot of stuff thats already been done (the same way it was once done) and get away with it bcuz ppl forgot about or have never seen the old movies. i can think of plenty of examples
