Sir John Mills ‘Hobson’s Choice’

Sir John Mills ‘Hobson’s Choice’

I only discovered this delightful film recently. It charts the rise of Will Mossop, played by Sir John Mills, from boot hand in Henry Hobson’s shop to co-owner of the business. Ably assisted by Brenda de Banzie as Maggie Hobson, the eldest daughter. A very young Prunella Scales (Sybil Fawlty) also appears as the youngest sister Vicky. Starring Charles Laughton as Hobson, directed by Sir David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia) with music by Sir Malcolm Arnold. The scene shows the arranged meeting in the park, Maggie discovers there is ‘another woman’ and sets off to sort it out!

@smoojah Thank you for putting this here and infroming a wider audience of its existence. I think this is the greatest movie ever made: Wittily scripted, perfectly paced (by a pre-Hollywood David Lean) with perfect performances all round. It also has that certain quality that is sadly lacking in most modern movies: CHARM.

It was Malcolm Arnold. He wrote the music. Seems he was more prolific than I had realised before.

The cry of the useless – we had two choices – Hobson’s Choice and Hobson’s Choice. Of course it is not true. Sounds like Malcolm Arnold film music though. I will check that out at least.

My parents saw this film on their first date I believe. It has a special place in our family for several reasons.

North Americans who only know David Lean for epics like Dr. Zhivago and Bridge on the River Kwai are deprived from experiencing much of his genius. Hobson’s Choice modestly eclipses both. And don’t get me started on Great Expectations…
