Gone With The Wind endures because of its heroine. Scarlett, in a time when women weren’t aloud to assert themselves, she refused to let anything break her. Through all her faults, she was the toughest spirit in an impossible time.

@sara4ever93 I’m a huge fan of Gone with the Wind, and I completely understand where you’re coming from. Really I do. But I’d like to believe that movies like Lord of the Rings, the King’s Speech, and other beautiful artful films will define our generation. I mean, you don’t see crap like Twilight winning Academy Awards 🙂

@BritneyK89 In that case, my opinion is they should just speak like themselves! Harry Potter actors and actresses are very succesful and use their regular accents (besides the fact that the book is British, but seriously it’s not necessary to speak with a foreign accent in an American movie!).

Looking at it today, she sounds really snobby don’t you think?

@twilightspectacular Oh, and back then it was popular to speak with an English accent in movies because of influences from British theatre. Actors/actresses were trained to speak that way. It’s a bit like how today, because the American film industry is the most dominant film industry, many foreign actors/actresses learn American accents.

However, the woman who plays Scarlet, Vivian Leigh, was British. I thought her southern accent was amazing, though.

@twilightspectacular I completely agree with you! It always baffles me how some people talk about the past as if things like slavery, the Civil War, lack of basic civil rights for women and minorities, segregation, etc. didn’t exist. I’ll take 21st century America any day, thanks!

I agree that movies back then were not all great. People only have that perception because the movies we see from those days are the classics. We don’t see the terrible movies that have long been forgotten.

@sara4ever93 Of course today’s movies would seem terrible compared to 20th century movies if you go around comparing Gone with the Wind to Twilight. That’s a bad comparison, as no one has ever claimed that Twilight is/will be a classic and it is not representative of the countless movies made today. If you think all modern movies involve cheap jokes and special effects, perhaps you need to watch more movies! Also, popular music isn’t the only music being made today; it’s just what’s popular.

This is fine motion picture! The today’s Hollywood productions don’t even come close, unfortunately.

@schroeder8911 oh ok.. i feel bad for him. i don’t understand why he was an actor, then became a WWII spy. That would draw a lot of attention.

@twilightspectacular The guy that played Ashley Wilkes was English. In fact, he later became a WWII spy; he was unwittingly killed by the luftwaffe whey they thought they were shooting down Churchill’s plane.

@sara4ever93 the 1800s were crazy. Slavery and killing random people were legal!
Cheap jokes? Back then, they thought torturing slaves was funny! I threw up after learning that!
The book takes place in America. These people have British accents. That’s terrible acting. If they are British, a good actor would be able to fake an American accent.
Twilight is gross. My username means Sunsets are spectacular. not the movie/book.

@tvaddict69 I totally agree with you! So many people are saying “I wish I was born in the 1800s.” Slavery would be legal, killing would be too, and everyone has hideous and uncomfortable fake wigs that are declared “fashionable.” And the guys have nerd hair slicked back with a lot of freakin hairspray. and the guys wear weird ruffles on their clothes that would b considered for girls these days. The girls dresses look so uncomfortable and too girly and poofy. glad i was born in 1999! 😀

    1:36 is my favorite line.
um, why is everyone talking in a British accent? Isn’t GWtW an American movie? And takes place in America. Are the actors British?
