Ben-Hur – Trailer [1959] [32nd Oscar Best Picture]

Judah Ben-Hur lives as a rich Jewish prince and merchant in Jerusalem at the beginning of the 1st century. Together with the new governor his old friend Messala arrives as commanding officer of the Roman legions. At first they are happy to meet after a long time but their different politic views separate them. During the welcome parade a brick falls down from Judah’s house and barely misses the governor. Although Messala knows that they are not guilty he sends Judah to the galleys and throws his mother and sister into prison. But Judah swears to come back and take revenge. One thing I notice about old trailers is that they all try to sell the film as something that will never be surpassed. I’ve seen that tagline about 3 times now.

Man, I thought the trailers nowadays were thick with spoilers! This one had a narrator paid to reveal every twist! Oh well, I guess everyone was supposed to have read the book already.

Michael Moore has gravely tried to hurt this actor, but he can never fever-dream to achieve something remotely comparable to this epic transportation of thought and wisdom and heroism to the screen. He might apply, but his attempts are futile. Make something larger than your life itself..and you will be remembered..

@zeppelin0110 the religion in the story is more powerful and moving, not necessarily all in your face and preachy, because its really a story of two best friends that grew to hate each other, and the hate was destroying them, until forgiveness is brought into the picture through christ. not necessarily that they forgave each other (not to give anything away) but it’s like god was forgiving them over the course of the sad story. it’s not gimmicky, i swear. you really need to see it to believe it

@zeppelin0110 Watch it first, it’s not gimmicky. If you liked Lawrence of Arabia & GWTW you’ll probably like this too.

Not sure why this movie look gimmicky compared to Lawrence of Arabia & GWTW.. Maybe I’ll watch it someday, but it seems like it might have strong religious undertones in it.
