Situated up north in Aberdeenshire, Peterhead is definitely a Heeland toon(as they say up there). It is perhaps best known for its port and fishing capacity. Peterhead is often part of the TV show \u2018Trawlermen\u2019. It is also one of the very first \u2018new town\u2019s\u2019 in Scotland \u2013 not the ones they built back in the sixties for miss-placed war families; one built by fishermen in the 16th<\/sup> century. No joke. Port Henry was built in 1539 and since then the town has done nothing but thrive. There are a lot of fish out there.<\/p>\n

Peterhead was a Jacobite community and fell on the wrong side of the Bonnie Prince Charlie fight. It was one of their main ports through which money and men would come through. Nowadays they have a conjunction of harbours, the most recent of which was built using convict labour. It was back in 1912 but it is still a bit unacceptable. The new harbour has two breakwaters which helped to make it one of the most popular fishing ports in the North.<\/p>\n

Peterhead Prison Museum<\/a><\/h3>\n

Those prisoners we mentioned above? This is where they came from. This former Victorian-era prison is a 6-acre site outside of the town and carries history as the only place in Britain ever used by the SAS to end a siege on the mainland (the notorious 1987\u00a0 D-Wing Riot<\/a>). The prison only stopped taking convicts in the late 2000\u2019s, eventually closing completely in 2013. The prison has subsequently become a museum. It holds a thousand, thousand stories within its walls. It\u2019s haunting and terrifying, and you will learn a lot. The promo video below gives you a flavour of what to expect.<\/p>\n
