The Hound Dog breeds or Hound Group is one of the seven general dog groups recognised by the Kennel Club UK (as of 2021) and of the 221 breeds of dogs accepted by them, 38 falls into this category. Like all dogs, this group was selectively bred to fulfil specific purposes and in the Hound case, this covers a broad range of both sizes & specialities.<\/p>\n

Hound Breeds<\/h3>\n

Generally speaking, hound breeds were selectively bred to be used for hunting dogs, using either scent or sight. While today few hounds are used for hunting purposes, the instinct still remains strong in all the hound breeds.<\/p>\n

Sighthounds tend to be large breeds as in the past they were expected to chase down large game such as deer, elk, moose, and wild boar. This required size and strength and the most impressive of these is the Irish Wolfhound, which can be close to 3ft tall (often reaching 85-90cms) and weigh as much as 120lbs (54.5 kg)<\/p>\n

Scenthounds were generally smaller breeds that were used to chase prey to ground where the hunters would either dig them out or send terriers down.<\/p>\n

Two have been bred specifically for speed, these being the Greyhound & Whippet which were originally used for catching Rabbits and Hares, but today if not pets are often involved in racing.<\/p>\n
