Pinterest users who search for help and advice about vaccines will be directed to public health bodies as part of Pinterest’s attempts to tack the spread of false information. <\/span>Pinterest is a social media site which allows users to share images associated with a range of topics and can pin them to a digital personal pinboard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, the social media platform stopped showing results for vaccine searches to tackle misinformation. Under the new policies any searched for\u00a0“measles,” “vaccine safety” and other related health terms\u00a0 will result in pins from public health bodies including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centres for Disease Control and the WHO-established Vaccine Safety Net. This means users will not be getting incorrect information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pinterest explained in a blog post<\/strong>: “Last year, we made the decision to stop showing results for searches related to vaccines as a way to prevent people from encountering harmful health misinformation,”<\/span><\/p>\n

“This new search experience only shows content from leading public health institutions – you won’t see any recommendations or comments on Pins in these results. We also won’t show ads.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The post added:<\/strong> “We’re taking this approach because we believe that showing vaccine misinformation alongside resources from public health experts isn’t responsible.<\/span><\/p>\n

“As we continue to tackle health misinformation, we remove it and the accounts that spread it from our service. But we also want to bring expert content onto Pinterest.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The WHO said the anti-vaccine was a “top 10 global health threat” in 2019. In the first half of 2019, there was around 90,000 cases of measles in Europe. The rise in measles cases was partly due to\u00a0disinformation about vaccines\u00a0on social media, which it said was just as contagious and dangerous as the diseases it helps to spread.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement, the WHO said:<\/strong> “Social media platforms are the way many people get their information and they will likely be major sources of information for the next generations of parents.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We see this as a critical issue and one that needs our collective effort to protect people’s health and lives.”<\/span><\/p>\n
