{"id":14674,"date":"2019-08-14T10:59:43","date_gmt":"2019-08-14T09:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fiveminutesspare.com\/news\/?p=14674"},"modified":"2019-08-14T10:59:43","modified_gmt":"2019-08-14T09:59:43","slug":"watchdog-bans-vw-and-philadelphia-adverts-for-gender-stereotyping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiveminutesspare.com\/news\/watchdog-bans-vw-and-philadelphia-adverts-for-gender-stereotyping\/","title":{"rendered":"Watchdog bans VW and Philadelphia adverts for gender stereotyping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Two television ads have been banned for gender stereotyping rules, the adverts are the first to be banned under the new UK rules.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The ban for adverts using &#8220;harmful gender stereotypes&#8221; or those which are likely to cause &#8220;serious or widespread offence&#8221; came into force in June 2019. The first banned ad was for Philadelphia cheese which showed two fathers leaving a baby on a restaurant conveyor belt. The other was a VW advert which showed men being adventurous whilst a woman was sat alone by a pram.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was around 128 complaints to the \u00a0Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for the Philadelphia advert. The complaints said the advert suggested that men were not capable of caring for children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the other hand, the VW advert got three complains for showing men doing adventurous things whilst a woman looks after the baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U4tAVYvYz7U\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Geraldine Ingham, head of marketing for Volkswagen UK, said:<\/strong> &#8220;As both a leader within this business and as a mother, I do not believe that the roles of the women in this advertisement are in any way portrayed negatively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Just like the men, they are shown taking part in challenging situations, such as in a tent perched on a mountainside and in a spacecraft, while another is shown to be embarking on what is surely life&#8217;s greatest and most valuable role &#8211; raising another human being.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yyqsj5EGu1A\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><code>\u00a0<\/code><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>A Mondelez spokeswoman said:<\/strong> &#8220;We are extremely disappointed with the ASA decision.
